Sodium Persulfate Recirculation Injection in Northern CA

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

The Legacy Remediation Team just finished up an 8 week Alkaline Activated Sodium Persulfate project in San Francisco County. The project site was very small, and it was located in a populated residential area.

We injected a mixture of Klozur Sodium Persulfate provided by Evonik, 25% Sodium Hydroxide, and site groundwater. The groundwater was pulled from 3 separate zones, it was kept separate, mixed with the oxidant and activator, then it was injected back into those same three (3) separate groundwater zones.

We mobilized one of our custom built self contained Injection Trailers.

This specific Injection Trailer was built with three (3) separate systems, each system consisting of two (2) mix tanks, one (1) Injection Pump, and a 2-Point Injection Manifold.

The Monitoring Wells were screened in 3 separate groundwater zones

In most cases the Injection Wells had a single screen interval, but some Injection Wells had two screen intervals. For the dual-screened wells, we used a custom well head injection manifold, in conjunction with a down-well pneumatic packer to isolate the two screen intervals.

Daily we were running nineteen (19) electrical pieces of equipment to support this project, that included electrical mixers, pumps and support equipment.

Our system wiring was quite complicated, and we required a larger than normal generator.

Due to limited available onsite storage space, the Legacy Team scheduled weekly deliveries for both the Klozur Sodium Persulfate and the 25% Sodium Hydroxide activator.

Unloading chemicals in the street was a not an ideal situation, but it was the only available option.

Traffic control was utilized onsite during all the chemical deliveries.

The chemicals were stored onsite in separate containment berms, within a temporary fence with privacy screen.

Due to permit requirements, all chemicals needed to be stored 20 feet from all property lines. This requirement resulted in the chemicals being positioned down the center of the property.

The Klozur Sodium Persulfate was delivered in 55.1 pound bags

The 25% Sodium Hydroxide was delivered in 330 gallon IBC Totes.

Being in Tyvek Chemical Suits, Chemical Goggles and Level C PPE for 8 weeks straight can be challenging on its own......

but managing the mixing 6 Mix Tanks, Groundwater Extraction from 6 Monitoring Wells, and Injection into 6 Injection Wells takes real skill.

It was not an easy task, but with 10+ years of experience Sean made it look easy.

On the last day of this successful but challenging project, Sean was ready to move on to the next one.

It may not look like a lot of equipment once every thing is wrapped up and ready to be loaded, but it took quite a bit of effort to get to this point with a project like this.
